High School Roundup: Hamilton reaches CIF round of 16

Orange Coast League singles champion Teague Hamilton’s postseason run came to an end on May 31 when he fell in a second-round match at the CIF Southern Section Boys’ Individual Tennis Championships.

Hamilton, the Laguna Beach High senior, was eliminated in the round of 16 by PAC League champion, Eli Whittle of Arroyo Grande, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, at Seal Beach Tennis Center in Seal Beach.

Gage Brymer of University High, singles champion of the Pacific Coast League, went undefeated in four matches (8-0 sets record) and swept his way to the Southern Section singles title.

Hamilton won his first two postseason matches by sweep last week at the individual sectional tournament play at Corona del Mar High. He had received a first-round bye for the individual championships.

Hamilton will compete Saturday and Sunday at the 98th annual Santa Barbara Designated Junior Tournament. Later this month, he will compete at the 111th annual Southern California Junior Sectional Championships, the largest junior tournament in the country.

In other tennis news, the Laguna boys’ program presented varsity team awards to the following players for the 2013 season, Newcomer Award: Ryan Gee; Most Improved: Tim Nguyen; Sportsmanship: Jeff Spitz; CIF Game Ball: doubles team of Alex Duong and Owen Weber; MVP: Teague Hamilton; Breaker Award: Morgan Lebby.

Four Breakers, catcher Kennedi Gherardini, pitchers Haley Putnam and Halle Redfearn, and shortstop Cory Kent, made the 2013 All-Orange Coast League Softball Team.
