Laguna baseball opens summer campaign
The Laguna Beach High baseball team launched its eight-game summer season Monday with a road game at Newport Harbor.
Freshman Jeff Bruyjtens had an RBI-single and on the mound, sent the Sailors down in order in the fifth inning.
No game score was kept and Laguna substituted freely, Laguna Coach Mike Bair said.
“We are very young this year and need some of our guys to step up as pitchers to be able to compete at a high level,” Bair said.
Laguna’s summer schedule continues with a pair of 5 p.m. games next week starting with a Monday visit to University. The Breakers host Beckman Wednesday.

Monday: at University, 5 p.m.
Wednesday: vs. Beckman, 5 p.m.
July 21: at La Habra High, 4 p.m.
July 23: home vs. Foothill, 5 p.m.
July 28: at Irvine, 5 p.m.
July 30: home vs. Capistrano Valley Christian, 5 p.m.

Boys’ Basketball
Competing in two summer leagues this past week, the Breakers went 2-3 in their five games since Tuesday.
Laguna lost to both Dana Hills and Edison and defeated the Mission Viejo junior varsity team in Dana Hills Summer League action last week.
The Breakers beat Crean Lutheran Monday and lost a one-point game Tuesday to Trabuco Hills at the Godinez Summer League. Scores from the games weren’t available.
“I feel like we’re improving although sometimes, it’s one step forward and one step back,” Laguna Coach Bret Fleming said. “A lot of our guys need to still adjust to the intensity and physicality of the varsity level.”
Laguna’s busy summer schedule continues with an appearance this weekend at the Concordia Tournament, which starts Friday . The Breakers play two games both Friday and Sunday.

Football
The 55th annual Orange County North/South Prep All-Star Charity Football Game was played Thursday at Orange Coast College. The score wasn’t available at press time.
Record-setting Laguna Beach High running back Nathan Lancaster was part of the South team.
