Ross-Jennings stay perfect on tour
The top-seeded team of April Ross (Costa Mesa) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach) stayed perfect on the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals 2014 tour by capturing their fifth title in five tournament finals appearances.
Ross and Walsh Jennings won the women’s tournament at the Cincinnati Open Sunday (Aug. 31) by defeating second-seeded Brooke Sweat (Costa Mesa)/Lauren Fendrick (Hermosa Beach) in the final, 21-14, 21-15.
Whitney Pavlik of Laguna Beach and teammate Heather Hughes (Redondo Beach), seeded fifth, tied for equal 13th-place. Summer Ross (Huntington Beach)/Emily Day (Hermosa Beach), the No. 3-seed, finished equal fifth-place.
Casey Patterson of Huntington Beach and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) won their second tournament title on the current AVP tour by winning the men’s championship of the Cincinnati Open. Patterson and Gibb, the No. 2-seed, defeated the sixth-seeded team of Ryan Doherty (Fountain Valley)/Nick Lucena (El Segundo), 21-13, 23-21, in Sunday’s final.
Patterson and Gibb previously won the Salt Lake City Open Aug. 10.
The Cincinnati Open started Aug. 28 and concluded Sunday at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio.
Two tour stops remain on the 2014 AVP schedule. The next tournament is the Atlantic City (N.J.) Open which starts Friday and runs through Sunday. The tour ends with the AVP Championships Sept. 18-21 at the Huntington Beach Pier.
Surfers’ videos sought for contest
The O’Neill Coldwater Classic currently is accepting video submissions from non-sponsored surfers for the chance to win a wild-card entry into the event which is in its second year.
The classic will be run between Oct. 28-Nov. 1 at Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz.
The Assn. of Surfing Professionals (ASP) specialty event will give 16 non-sponsored professional surfers the chance to win an exclusive O’Neill Wetsuits contract worth $50,000 in travel incentives and contest fees.
To apply, surfers must provide a 30-second unedited action video representing his best surfing capabilities, a head shot and a completed application.
All submissions will be reviewed by a panel of judges with four being selected for an Online Public Voting phase from Sept. 30-Oct. 6. The surfer in the one video receiving the most votes will earn the wild-card invitation.
