Ross-Walsh Jennings 6 for 6

The Assn. of Volleyball Professionals 2014 season tour is winding down, but there has been no slowing down the team of April Ross (Costa Mesa) and Kerri Walsh Jennings (Manhattan Beach).

The duo, top-ranked throughout the tour, made it 6 for 6 in women’s tournament championships by winning the Atlantic City (N.J.) Open Sunday.

Ross/Walsh Jennings defeated the No. 2-seeeded team of Summer Ross (Huntington Beach)/Emily Day (Hermosa Beach), 21-19, 21-12, in the final.

Ross/Walsh Jennings is 31-0 in match play this season.

Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach) and teammate Heather Hughes (Redondo Beach) played their way into the quarterfinals where the pair was eliminated from title contention by Ross/Walsh Jennings who picked up a 21-13, 21-15 victory.

Pavlik/Hughes, seeded fourth, finished in equal-fifth-place with the 11th-seeded and quarterfinalist team of Amanda Dowdy/Branagan Fuller.

For the second straight week and third time on the tour, Casey Patterson (Huntington Beach) and Jake Gibb (Costa Mesa) captured a men’s tournament championship by winning the Atlantic City Open.

Patterson and Gibb, the top seed for the tournament, defeated the third-seeded team of Ryan Doherty (Fountain Valley)/Nick Lucena (El Segundo), 21-15, 21-14, in Sunday’s final. Patterson and Gibb won the Atlantic City Open for the second consecutive year.

The men’s title match was a repeat of last week’s Cincinnati Open final where Patterson and Gibb also swept Doherty/Lucena (21-13, 23-21) on Aug. 31 to win the tournament.

Patterson and Gibb won their first tour title Aug. 10 at the Salt Lake City Open.

The 2014 AVP tour comes to a close in Huntington Beach with the AVP Championships, which open Thursday and run through Sept. 21 at the Huntington Beach Pier.
