The sting may have faded, but bouncing back from a loss is what the Laguna Beach High football squad will be out to do Friday when it travels to Westminster.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. at Boswell Field.

The Breakers, coming off their first loss of the young season, a 37-10 home setback to University, will meet a Westminster team that is ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section Southern Division.

Laguna (1-1) tumbled from its No. 9 ranking in the same poll after last week’s loss to University.

“We didn’t execute well and they (University played with much more energy than we did,” Laguna Coach Corey Brown said. “We’ll need to have that energy when we play Westminster. They’re a good football team. They run the spread on offense and have a solid quarterback and two or three backs who can run the ball really well.”

The Breakers trailed University, 14-0, before the game was five minutes old. The Trojans led, 21-3, at the half and built the lead to 37-3 in the fourth quarter before Laguna scored its only touchdown on a 36-yard pass from quarterback Jack Simon to Matt Hayes.

Bruce Knill earlier had kicked a 20-yard field goal to cap Laguna’s second possession of the game and draw the Breakers to within 14-3 late in the opening quarter.

The Breakers lost three fumbles, one of which was recovered in the end zone for a University touchdown, and had an interception that set up another score for the Trojans. On defense, they gave up a 79-yard touchdown pass.

Laguna is going up against a Westminster team that won its first game of the season last week in convincing fashion.

The Lions (1-1) cruised past rival Marina, 56-7, in the annual Black and Blue Game between the schools. Quarterback Matt Dinh threw three touchdown passes and ran for two others. The junior passed for 224 yards and rushed for 100 more.

The Lions were in complete control by halftime, leading, 49-0.

Westminster’s loss (a 21-0 defeat) came at the hands of Garden Grove, the top-ranked team in the CIF-SS Southern Division.
