Local athletes fair well at surfing event

Athletes from Laguna Beach High, Thurston Middle School, and El Morro and Top of the World elementary schools earned top placements last weekend at the Western Surfing Assn. Championship Tour Event No. 3.

The competition drew more than 430 athletes Saturday and Sunday at Mission Beach in San Diego. Titles were up for grabs in 27 divisions.

Laguna athletes capturing first place in their respective divisions were Hayden Rodgers (Top of the World) in Boys’ Under-and-10, and Liv Stokes (Thurston) in Girls’ U14 Longboard.

Micro Grom Boys’ U9: 4. Jaxson Hutcheon (El Morro).

Boys’/Girls’ U10: 1. Hayden Rodgers (Top of the World); 2. Hudson Saunders (El Morro).

Boys’ U12: 2. Tyson Lockhart (Thurston).

Boys’ U14: 5. Trey Lockhart (Thurston).

Boys’ U16: 2. Jeremy Shutts (Laguna Beach).

Girls’ U14: 3. Kelly Smith (Thurston).

Girls’ U16: 3. Kelly Smith; 4. Kayla Coscino (Thurston).

Girls’ U14 Longboard: 1. Liv Stokes (Thurston).

Open Women’s Longboard: 4. Liv Stokes.
