Youth Sports Roundup: Laguna poloists place third in tourney
The Laguna Beach Water Polo Club’s 10-and-Under coed “A” team brought home a third-place medal in the Platinum Division Sunday from the 53rd Southern Pacific Zone Age Group Championships.
The 10U tournament, played at El Toro High, started Saturday.
The Laguna Beach “A” team, led by head coach Albie Beeler and coaches Bryan Buhagiar and Rob Capobianco, started the tournament with a 12-4 victory over Foothill Club Water Polo on Saturday. In a 7:30 a.m. game Sunday, Laguna went to 2-0 by taking a 9-7 win from SOCAL Water Polo. In its second game Sunday, Laguna dropped a 9-2 decision to Newport Beach Water Polo Club.
The Laguna athletes played well in their next game against Orange County Water Polo, winning, 11-7.
The third-place medal is the second medal in two tournament appearances by the 10U coed team this year. The squad also took third place in their division last month at the fifth annual Evan Cousineau Memorial Cup.
“We have a great team this year,” Beeler said. “The kids love to work hard and are always wanting to do more.”
The Laguna 10U coed “A” team at the tournament was: Sai Bassett, Joey Capobianco, Sophie Colladay, Natasha Denny, Nate Evans, Andrew Kelleher, Myha Pinto, Eleanor Ramsey, Rebecca Storke and Cleo Washer.
