Newport Harbor 2, Edison 1

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Seniors Brice Manning and Christian Ochoa scored second-half goals as Newport Harbor upset the defending league champions on the road Friday.

Manning scored unassisted in the 45th minute, while Ochoa scored the game-winner in the 61st minute on Felix Villavicencio’s assist.

Newport senior goalie Rudy Reyes made five saves. Coach Juan Mares said senior Omar Gonzalez and junior Kevin Gomez helped anchor the defense in the second half, after Edison had took the lead in the fifth minute of the game.

Newport Harbor (8-6-3, 1-1 in league) plays host to Marina on Wednesday.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Newport Harbor 30, Santiago 29

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Kasey Thompson hit the game-winning shot with a little more than a minute left, and the Sailors hung on for the nonleague victory Friday night at Newport Harbor High.

Thompson finished with 21 points, 14 rebounds and three blocks. Cierra Haas (four points) and Jennifer Lopez (three points) also contributed for Newport.

The Sailors (7-10) resume Sunset League play Tuesday at Marina.

Irvine 50, Corona del Mar 38

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior guard Melanie de Arakal had 16 points, including three three-pointers, in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener Friday at CdM.

Sophomore Keaton Gaughan added seven points and seven rebounds for CdM (8-8, 0-1 in league), which plays at Woodbridge on Tuesday.

Edison 67, Newport Harbor 45

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior Vince Aqueveque scored a team-high 12 points for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Friday night at Edison.

Newport Harbor (5-10, 0-2 in league) lost its eighth straight game. The Sailors play at Estancia in a nonleague game Saturday at 7 p.m.
