SAN LUIS OBPSPO — Freshman Slater Davies doubled in two runs in the eighth inning to help the visiting Pirates rally from a 2-1 deficit in the nonconference game Friday.

Davies, who stepped in for sophomore Zach Chavez after Chavez was beaned with the first pitch of the game, went two for three.

Freshman Chris Carlson was three for five with a run batted in for OCC (2-0), for which freshman Bryan Garza was two for four with a double.

Sophomore starter Mike Smith allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings and freshman Garrett Hartwell worked 2 2/3 scoreless, hitless innings to get the win for OCC.

Vanguard 12, Cal State East Bay 4

HAYWARD — Kyle Hardman and Bryson Rahier both had two hits and three runs batted in to lead the Lions in the nonconference game Friday.

Matthew Avery, Jason Dovel and Bryce Arroyo also had two hits each as part of Vanguard’s 14 hits.

The Lions are 3-2.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Penn State

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Cory Yoder had 14 kills to help lead the No. 7-ranked Anteaters past the No. 8 Nittany Lions, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 25-17, in a nonconference match Friday.

Carson Clark had 11 kills, Jordan DuFault had 10 kills and Anthony Spittle amassed 41 assists for UCI (5-5), which earned its first road win of the season.

Penn State is 6-2.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Devyn Choltko led Vanguard to a 8-0 win over La Sierra, and the Lions used 12 hits to score a 12-0 win in the five-inning nightcap Friday.

Choltko went three for three with three RBIs in the first game.

Kari Bergerson, Kaysle Flasck and Adriana Venezia had two hits each for Vanguard (3-2).
