COSTA MESA — Sophomore Chris Carlson went two for four with two runs batted on Tuesday, helping the Pirates’ stay unbeaten eight games into the season.

Justin Broussard and Eilert Meyers each had two hits for OCC (7-0-1).

Jed Vandernaald (3-0) picked up the victory after pitching 4 1/3 innings in relief. He did not allow a run, gave up two hits with no walks and struck out four.

The Pirates open a three-game series at the College of the Desert on Thursday at p.m.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 83, Concordia 76 OT

IRVINE — Center Esther Timmermans finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three steals and one block in the Lions’ Golden State Athletic Conference game on Tuesday.

Timmermans forced overtime after hitting a free throw to tie the game at 65-65 with eight seconds left in the second half.

Maree Drennan had 15 points and 15 rebounds for Vanguard (18-5, 12-3 in conference).

Chelsea Alfafara contributed 16 points.

The Eagles fell to 7-15 and 4-11 overall.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Concordia 86, Vanguard 68

IRVINE — Christopher Raybon scored 15 points to lead the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday night.

Cameron Nettles added 12 points and Ennis Whatley Jr. came off the bench to score 10 points for Vanguard (14-12, 6-9 in conference).

Austin Simon led No. 11-ranked Concordia with 29 points.

The Eagles improved to 21-5, 11-4.

Vanguard 9, Biola 0

COSTA MESA — The Lions dominated in their Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Gabriela Bergmanova swept at love at No. 1 singles, as did Nina Pudar at No. 2 singles. Ekaterin Gabashvili (No. 3), Gabriele Alford (No. 4), Petronella Lindahl (No. 5) and Ashley Tebeau (No. 6) also earned wins in singles for Vanguard (1-1, 1-0 in conference), ranked No. 9 in the NAIA.

Biola dropped to 0-3, 0-1.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Biola 1

COSTA MESA — The Lions won all six matches in singles in their Golden State Athletic Conference opener Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Lucas Pereira led the way with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for No. 8-ranked Vanguard (2-2, 1-0 in conference).

Yahor Kryvaruchka (No. 2), Roger Muri (No. 3), Robin Wagner (No. 4), Lukas Larsson (No. 5) and Radek Rosiak (No. 6) also won in singles for the Lions.

Biola fell to 1-1, 0-1.
