INDUSTRY— UC Irvine junior Travis Russell captured the individual title of the event that concluded Tuesday at Industry Hills Golf Club at Pacific Palms.

Russell, a Newport Harbor High product who shot par 72 in the final round, won with a birdie on the second playoff hole over Sacramento State’s Ryan Williams and Loyola Marymount’s Tyler Torano. All three had finished 54 holes with two-under totals of 214 on the “Ike” Eisenhower Course.

UCI sophomore Pete Fernandez was fourth (216), junior Allan Jun was eighth (220), freshman Jacob Schulze was 17th at 227 and senior Michael Yang was 31st at 233.

Senior Mickey Chan, playing as an individual, was 27th at 23 2.

The ‘Eaters finished second in the nine-team tournament with a three-round total of 876, four strokes behind Long Beach State.

Coach Paul Smolinski’s ‘Eaters, who have recorded four consecutive top-five finishes, return to action Monday and Tuesday in the North Ranch Intercollegiate at North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. Hawaii

IRVINE — Kevin Tillie had 10 kills, two aces and seven digs to lead the top-ranked Anteaters to a 25-20, 25-22, 25-11 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win at the Bren Events Center Tuesday to extend its winning streak to 10 matches.

Outside hitter Jeremy Dejno and opposite Zack La Cavera each added seven kills, while outside hitter Connor Hughes recorded six kills and six block assists for UCI (14-3, 11-3 in the MPSF). Middle blocker Colin Mehring led all players with seven total blocks and five kills.

Setter Daniel Stork totaled 34 set assists. La Cavera and Scott Kevorken each recorded five blocks in the win.

On Monday night, UCI defeated the Warriors, 21-25, 25-14, 21-25, 25-17, 15-11, behind a match-high 22 kills from Tillie.

Mehring had 13 kills on 15 swings (an .800 clip), added eight block assists and one solo block to pace UCI.

No. 11 Hawaii is 5-10, 4-8.

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 15, Baylor 3

IRVINE — Junior Dominique Taylor went three for four with five runs batted in and sophomore Taylor Sparks was three for four with a home run and four RBIs to lead the host Anteaters, who completed the nonconference series sweep on Sunday.

Freshman second baseman Mikey Duarte was three for four with one RBI, while sophomore Jerry McClanahan drove in three runs and sophomore Chris Rabago had two hits for UCI (3-0).

Junior Andrew Morales earned the victory, his first as an Anteater, with two scoreless innings of relief.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Master’s 76, Vanguard 65

SANTA CLARITA — Esther Timmermans scored 19 points to share game-high scoring honors for the No. 11-ranked Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Nicole Ballestero added 15 points and nine assists, Alison Drennan had 13 points and Maree Drennan had eight points and 10 rebounds for Vanguard (20-3, 10-3 in conference).

The Master’s, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, is 24-4, 9-4.

SANTA CLARITA — Selle Hann led all scorers with 20 points to go with nine rebounds for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Tuesday.

Chris Gorman added 19 points and Preston Wynne scored 12 points for Vanguard (16-12, 5-8 in conference).

The Master’s is 16-12, 5-8.
