Tar Heels win league

The Newport-Mesa Tar Heels boys’ fifth-grade All-Net team completed an outstanding winter season by winning the top division All-Net league title, going 13-1 and remaining ranked No. 1 in the division.

The Tar Heels played their best basketball of the season crushing the Yorba Linda Pumas, 57-26, and Niguel Aliso Evolution, 51-9, last weekend to capture the regular-season title.

Jake Hamilton led all scorers averaging 16.5 points per game and 6.5 steals per game, while Nico Dasca added 8.0 ppg and 3.0 spg.

DJ Rodman averaged seven rebounds per game and 4.0 ppg, Luke Chelf produced 7.0 ppg, Sam Barela 4.0 ppg, 2.0 spg and Matt Olson 5.0 ppg, 3.0 rpg.

Johnny King manned the paint blocking four shots and pulling in 14 rebounds, while Mason Melcer (2.0 pp, 2.0 spg), Adam Flood (3.0 ppg, 3.5 rpg) and Ethan Barnes (3.0 ppg, 2.0 spg) played tremendous defense shutting down both teams’ best scorers.

The Tar Heels led the league in scoring this season with a 47.26 average and allowed a league-low 28.0 points per game shutting down the best scoring teams all season.

The team is coached by Scott Stucki and will play in the top division in the All-Net Super Sectionals next weekend in Orange County.
