Corona del Mar 10, Peninsula 8

CORONA DEL MAR — Freshman Carson Williams earned his biggest win of the season to help the No. 6-ranked Sea Kings upset the No. 4-ranked Panthers in a key nonleague match of CIF Southern Section Division I teams Tuesday.

Williams scored a 6-2 win over Shuhei Shibahara, ranked No. 9 in the 18s in the United States Tennis Assn. Southern California rankings.

The first round ended in a 3-3 tie, and the second round ended tied 6-6 in sets, and 49-49 in games.

But in the third round CdM (5-1) swept all three doubles and Shane Korber defeated Shibahara, 6-4, to seal the victory.

Korber improved to 15-0 in singles. Ismean Aboubakare and Alec Adamson led the Sea Kings doubles with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 sweep.

Peninsula is 3-2.

Estancia 14, Ocean View 4

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Robert Marrone swept at No. 1 singles for the Eagles in the nonleague match Tuesday.

Estancia’s doubles teams swept, including No. 1 Matt Thomas and Dave Cornelius, No. 2 Erik Cerros and Joseph Kidane, and No. 3 John Rivera and Francisco Alvarez.

The Eagles (3-5) will face Orange Lutheran Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at Anaheim Tennis Center.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 17, Whitney 2

NEWPORT COAST — Junior Michael Yorita pitched three no-hit innings and also had a triple, a single and two runs batted in for the Lightning in the Academy League game Tuesday.

Junior Brandon Zelner pitched the first three innings, allowing three hits, while freshman Colby Boch had two singles and three RBIs for Sage Hill (2-4, 2-0 in league).

The Lightning play at Whitney Friday.

Costa Mesa 8, Los Amigos 0

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Junior Kory Bennion pitched a complete-game shutout, striking out six and allowing five hits for the Mustangs in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Bennion also went one for three with a double and three runs batted in. Senior Tyler Sheffner was three for four with a double and a stolen base for Costa Mesa (4-2).

The Mustangs play at Godinez to open Orange Coast League play Friday at 3:15 p.m.

La Quinta 10, Estancia 9

COSTA MESA — Victor Trujillo went two for two, with a double, two runs batted in a run scored and a stolen base for the Eagles in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Trujillo singled in Alex Trancoso with two outs in the sixth inning to help Estancia catch La Quinta, 9-9. The Eagles (3-3) were up, 8-3, after three innings. But the Aztecs scored three runs in the fifth and another three in the sixth.

Trancoso (two for five and an RBI), Brody Pearce (one for three with a triple), Tyler De la Pena (two for three) and Andres Hernandez (one for four with two RBIs) also contributed.

Estancia plays host to Laguna Beach (7-0) in an Orange Coast League opener Friday at 3:15 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Newport Harbor 8, Orange 2

ORANGE — Sophomore pitcher Hattie Marshall allowed one earned run and two hits as the Sailors won their La Quinta Tournament opener Tuesday at Orange High.

Marshall walked two and struck out nine for the Sailors (6-1). She was also two for four with a run batted in. Lauren Gandi got the team on the board, with her RBI double in the first inning scoring Mandy LeGault.

Newport Harbor continues the tournament when it plays host to Los Amigos on Thursday at 3:15 p.m.

Costa Mesa Tournament

COSTA MESA — Estancia went 1-2 Friday and Saturday finishing second in the Green Bracket.

The Eagles (1-5) ended with a 12-10 loss to Santa Ana Saturday. Rachelle Reynolds went two for two, Cassie Stevenson went two for three with three runs batted in, Claire Woodside was two for three and Roni Harry was two for four for Estancia.

The Eagles beat Los Amigos, 12-10, earlier Saturday. Reynolds went three for three with two home runs and six RBIs. Woodside went two for three with a double and Harry was two for three and scored three runs.

Estancia lost to Huntington Beach, 13-0, Friday, when the Eagles were no-hit.

Estancia plays at Yorba Linda Thursday, and then plays at Newport Harbor Saturday for a doubleheader that starts at 10 a.m.

Santa Margarita def. Newport Harbor

NEWPORT BEACH — The visiting Eagles, ranked No. 2 in CIF Southern Section Division I, earned a 25-19, 25-21, 25-18 sweep over the Sailors in the nonleague match Tuesday.

Senior Cody Caldwell had 16 kills for the Sailors (3-4), for whom Rusty Sary had 10 kills and Ian Sequeira had 25 assists.

The Tars return to action Friday in the Orange County Championships at Fountain Valley High. Newport Harbor is the No. 3 seed in Division I, in which Santa Margarita is top-seeded.

NEWPORT COAST — Junior Chris Zadra had 16 kills to help lead the Lightning to a 25-20, 25-18, 25-15 nonleague win Tuesday.

Sophomore Kent Kawaguchi had 14 kills, nine digs and six aces and freshman setter Nicky Boulos had 28 assists for Sage Hill (2-3).

Estancia 201, Calvary Chapel 227

COSTA MESA — Estancia junior Jake Knapp shot three-under-par 33 for medalist honors in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

Courtland Lee shot a 40 for the first-place Eagles, and Jake Stone (41), Bill Crosson (42) and Aaron Wood (45) also scored.

Estancia (5-0, 3-0 in league) faces Westminster on Thursday at Meadowlark Golf Club.

NEWPORT BEACH — Carter Norris shot one-over-par 37 on the front nine at Big Canyon Country Club to earn medalist honors for the Sailors in the nonleague match Tuesday.

Marcus Kiel (39), Brad Tapfer (39), Mason Moody (40) and Zach Eddy (42) also scored for Newport Harbor ( 3-4).

IRVINE — Ahmed Eltamami shot four-over-par 40 to earn medalist honors for the Lightning in their Academy League opener Tuesday at Strawberry Farms Golf Course.

Seniors Kam Fujii (41) and Jared Hoffman (43) also scored for Sage Hill (1-0, 1-0 in league).

Brethren Christian is 3-2, 1-1.

CORONA DEL MAR — Ashlee Powers was a double winner for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Tuesday.

Powers won the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 32.3 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:30.7. Devon Hoppe (400 in 1:00.2), Kristin Rivera (800 in 2:24.7), Emily Glenn (300 hurdles in 51.4), McKenzie Brown (triple jump, 32 feet, 4.5 inches), Britton Taylor (high jump, 5 feet) and Jessica Imani (discus, 121-5) were also individual winners for CdM.

CORONA DEL MAR — Alex Turney was a double winner for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Tuesday.

Turney won the 1,600 meters in 4 minutes, 42.4 seconds and the 300 intermediate hurdles in 41.6 seconds.

Kyle Iverson (400 in 53.3), Derek Satterfield (3,200 in 10:04.1), Troy Bolus (long jump, 19 feet, 8.5 inches), Ian Klug (high jump, 5-10) and Alex Imani (discus, 123-10) were also individual winners for CdM.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Beckman 18, Newport Harbor 8

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Sierra Michaelsen had two goals, one assist and 10 ground balls for the Sailors in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Amanda Olevsky and Stephanie Storch scored two goals each, while Chelsie Delameter had one goal and one assist and Delaney McCardle had one goal for Newport Harbor (3-2). Goalie Cailynn Smethurst recorded 10 saves.

Mater Dei 8, Newport Harbor 3

SANTA ANA — Logan Heath, Taylor Wildman and Jack Murrel scored for the Sailors in the nonleague game Tuesday.

Zach Vayda had nine saves and Dewy Wilson created eight loose ball turnovers.
