RENO — Sophomore Andrew Thurman pitched a career-long 72/3 innings and junior Scott Goettschling drove in three runs to help the visiting Anteaters even the nonconference series at one game apiece Friday.

Thurman struck out seven and allowed four hits, walking none. He had a no-hitter through 42/3 innings.

Senior third baseman D.J. Crumlich went two for four with one RBI and one run and freshman left-fielder Jeff Stephens went two for four for the winners (10-8).

Senior first baseman Jordan Fox had a hit and an RBI and sophomore shortstop Dillon Moyer also contributed to UCI’s seven-hit attack.

Vanguard 11

FRESNO — A 10-run sixth inning for the host Firebirds erased an 8-2 Vanguard lead in the Golden State Athletic Conference contest Friday.

The loss was the third in a row and ninth in their last 10 games for the Lions (9-11, 1-9 in conference).

John Collins led five Vanguard players with multiple hits, going three for five with a home run and two runs batted in.

Eric Sanchez, Brandon Young, Bryce Arroyo and Michael Castillo all had two hits and one RBI apiece for Vanguard.

Orange Coast 11,

Golden West 3

COSTA MESA — Freshman Kayla Blanco went three for three with a home run and three runs batted in and Heather Gorey and Katelyn O’Banion each had two RBIs to pace the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Friday.

Gorey was two for three and O’Banion was one for three for OCC (8-18, 2-8 in conference).

Nicolette Lujan was three for three, while Rebecca Kendrick, Ashley Arrington, Alosina Skipps and Whitney Day also had single RBI for the Pirates. Skipps homered.

OCC sophomore pitcher Daae Cantu went the distance in the five-inning game, allowing five hits and two earned runs to earn the win.

Golden West is now 7-12, 4-6.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, San Diego 3

IRVINE — Freshman Kat Facey won in singles and doubles to help the host Anteaters prevail in the nonconference match Friday.

Facey teamed with sister Ali to earn an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles, then topped her No. 4 singles foe, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

UCI split six singles sets, but won the doubles point to improve to 11-5.

USD is 3-7.

MEN’S TENNIS

Mission Valley Spring Classic

SAN DIEGO — UC Irvine split a pair of matches Friday, topping Marquette, 4-0, then dropping a 4-2 decision to Purdue.

UCI (2-13) swept all four singles matches that were completed against Marquette, with Fabian Matthews, Sam Gould, Jacob Jung and Shuhei Shibahahra providing the necessary points for the win.

Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, and Gould won at Nos. 1 and 2 singles against Purdue.

SAN DIEGO — Opposite Dillon Emery recorded nine kills and three service aces in the Pirates’ 25-18, 25-17, 25-22 Orange Empire Conference win on Friday.

Sam Jergens had six kills and four blocks for Orange Coast (7-4, 4-1 in conference).
