Orange County Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Corona del Mar High won three matches Saturday at Edison High to advance to Monday night’s Gold Division championship match.

The Sea Kings (9-3) will face Back Bay rival Newport Harbor in the Gold Division title match at 7 p.m. Monday at Edison.

“I thought we definitely played with the most purpose we’ve played with all year,” CdM Coach Steve Conti said of Saturday’s matches.

CdM got past Dana Hills, 25-17, 25-20, in a semifinal. Jack Reed had nine kills and five blocks, while Parker Brown had eight kills and two blocks. Joey Martino and Xan Yelich each had four kills.

Previously the Sea Kings topped Tesoro, 25-16, 25-13, in a quarterfinal. Brown had 14 kills, Reed added eight and Remy Lamons had five kills, a block and two service aces. Joe Ctvrtlik dished out 21 assists.

CdM also defeated El Dorado, 25-23, 28-26, in its final Division I pool-play match Saturday morning. Reed had 10 kills, and Lamons nine. Martino had seven kills, Yelich added five and Ctvrtlik had 21 assists.

Conti said Brown played libero in the El Dorado match after suffering a bone contusion just below the knee Friday against Foothill. However, Brown was back to outside hitter for CdM’s final two matches of the day.

Orange County Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High also swept its three matches Saturday at Edison, earning its way into the Gold Division title match against rival Corona del Mar on Monday night.

The Sailors (9-4) defeated Laguna Beach, 27-25, 25-17, in a Gold Division semifinal match. Clay Carr led the Sailors with 10 kills, Kevin Rakestraw added nine and Pierce Ward had five. Connor Leggett dished out 24 assists, and Nick Sargent and Max Richley had eight digs each.

Earlier Saturday, Newport Harbor outlasted Orange Lutheran in a quarterfinal match, 25-22, 28-30, 15-12. Carr and Rakestraw had 15 kills each for the Sailors, and Leggett had 35 assists.

The Sailors also defeated San Juan Hills, 25-15, 25-19, in their final Division I pool-play match. Ward had seven kills for Newport Harbor, and Richley added six digs.

“We’re still figuring things out,” Newport assistant Coach Taylor Govaars said. “But we’re playing really hard, which is good. Today I thought we got better every match.”

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 12, Santa Margarita 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Center specialist Taylor Epp, a senior, won 14 faceoffs as the Sea Kings earned a big nonleague victory over Santa Margarita on Saturday at CdM.

Senior Michael Keasey and junior Casey Mix each scored three goals and had two assists for CdM, which came into the match ranked No. 3 in the CIF Southern Section by Laxpower.com. Santa Margarita was ranked No. 5. Senior Hunter Molnar and junior Jack Ortlieb scored twice.

Seniors Connor Cruse, Matt English and Eric Fisher shined on defense for CdM (4-0), along with senior goalie Michael Ortlieb (10 saves).

Sage Hill 10, Temecula Valley 6

NEWPORT BEACH — Goalie David Swerdlow made 25 saves for the Lightning in its nonleague victory Friday.

Senior captain Ford Hanour had two goals and three assists, while Lucas Ellison, Jack Preston, Logan Hamilton and Daschle Grammar combined for the other eight goals.

Tom Fenner, Jay Murray and Charlie Kim played well on defense for the Lightning.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar National All-American Tournament

Corona del Mar High’s fifth-place match against La Jolla, scheduled for Saturday morning, was rained out.

Tournament director Tim Mang said the teams agreed to tie for fifth place in the prestigious tournament.

Second-seeded Menlo of Atherton won the title late Friday night, beating top-seeded defending champion University, 5-4, at the Palisades Tennis Club.

Sage Hill School senior Robbe Simon, who won all four of his singles matches and three of four doubles matches in the tournament, was named to the all-tournament team. The Lightning placed 15th as a team.

Mang said he wished to thank site directors Jody Young, Janice Turner and Sterling Bantle for their efforts in coordinating the tournament Friday. The two-day tournament was condensed to a single day due to the rainy weather.

BASEBALL

Godinez 8, Costa Mesa 5

COSTA MESA — Kage Kistler went two for three with a stolen base for the Mustangs in their Orange Coast League opener Friday.

Royce Friedmann was one for three with a run scored, and Kory Bennion was one for four with two runs scored for Costa Mesa (3-5).
