High School Roundup: CdM falls to Uni in key match

IRVINE — The No. 1- and No. 2-ranked boys’ tennis teams in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll faced each other on Thursday.

University is still on top of Corona del Mar, in the poll and now in the Pacific Coast League standings.

The Trojans beat the visiting Sea Kings, 12-6, in a first-place showdown in league. University usually wins these matchups and everything else as it has claimed four CIF Southern Section titles in the past five years.

University, the defending section champion, improved to 3-0 in league, while the Sea Kings dropped to 2-1.

CdM, which is 10-2 overall, fell behind University after the first round, 4-2. Alec Adamson, playing No. 3 singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Alex Murray and Zach Williams won sets for the Sea Kings.

The Sea Kings closed the gap to 7-5 by winning three of the six sets in the second round. Henry Gordon, at No. 2 singles, and Murray and Williams, as well as the No. 3 doubles team of Paul Kacik and Andrew Nguyen each won sets.

The Trojans were too tough in the final round, only dropping one of the six sets.

Murray and Williams gave CdM its only set in the third round. The senior duo won three sets.

BOYS’ GOLF

Corona del Mar 189, University 199

IRVINE — Senior Mike Moorhead and junior Chase Wheatley each shot even-par 36 at Strawberry Farms Golf Club on Thursday, earning medalist honors in a Pacific Coast League match and helping the Sea Kings continue their best start in the program’s history.

CdM improved to 14-0, 5-0 in league.

Moorhead collected three birdies Wheatley had one birdie.

Karick Brown had a 37 for CdM, followed Brian Mull (38) and John Davenport (42).

The Sea Kings play host to San Clemente at Newport Beach Country Club on Wednesday at 2:45 p.m.

Sage Hill 206, Brethren Christian 235

COSTA MESA — Ahmed Eltamami was the medalist shooting a one-under-par 36 for the Lightning in the Academy League match Thursday at Costa Mesa Country Club’s Los Lagos Course.

Freshman Adam Wang shot his best score of the season of 39. Freshman Michael Phan and junior Tanner Tremaine shot 42 and 43, respectively for Sage Hill (7-3 overall, 3-1 league).

Sage Hill 18, Brethren Christian 0

HUNTINGTON BEACH — No. 1 singles player Robbe Simon and No. 2 Sam Sherman swept at love for the Lightning in the Academy League match Thursday.

The No. 1 doubles team of Alex Manolakas and Eric Magliarditi, and the No. 2 tandem of Garrett Rapport and David Kim also didn’t drop a game for Sage Hill 4-6, 3-1 in league.

Los Alamitos 11, Newport Harbor 7

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior Christian Lee, playing No. 2 singles, won two out of three sets in the Sailors’ Sunset League match on Thursday.

Newport Harbor’s No. 3 doubles team of Troy Arnold and Michael Eder upset Los Alamitos’ top team.

The Sailors (8-4, 2-1 in league) play at Huntington Beach on Monday at 3 p.m.

Laguna Beach 11, Estancia 7

COSTA MESA — Matt Thomas and Erik Cerros swept at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, 6-3, 6-0, for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League match Thusday.

Estancia dropped to 9-4, 3-2 in league.

Costa Mesa 123, Savanna 26

ANAHEIM — Sophomore Tyler Connors won the 100-yard backstroke, earning a CIF Southern Section automatic qualifying time of 59.32 seconds during the Mustangs’ nonleague meet on Thursday.

Connors recorded a CIF consideration time of 2:13.69 in the 200 individual medley.

James Lewis earned a CIF consideration time of 52.59 in the 100 freestyle.

The Mustangs improved to 6-3.

Newport Harbor 77, Marina 54

Los Alamitos 82, Newport 53

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Titus Hasson, Fritz Howser, Marty Taylor and Ethan Cochran won one event each for the Sailors in the Sunset League double-dual scoring meet Thursday at Marina.

Hasson won the 200 meters in 22.33, Howser won the pole vault with a clearance of 13 feet, 9 inches, Taylor won the shot put (57-9 ½) and Cochran won the discus (187-6).

Steve Michaelsen was second in the shot put (55-7) and discus (172-7) for Newport Harbor (1-2 in league).

CORONA DEL MAR — Thomas Testini finished first in the 100- and 200-meter sprints during the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League meet on Thursday.

Testini had marks of 11.2 seconds in the 100 and 22.8 in the 200.

Blake Myers won the 1,600 (4:46.7) and 3,200 events (10:50.5).

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Irvine 80, Corona del Mar 47

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Ashlee Powers swept the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League meet on Thursday.

Powers won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 26.3 seconds and the 3,200 in 12:01.9.

Karléh Wilson finished first in the shot put (41 feet, nine inches) and discus throw (129-1).

Marina 75, Newport 53

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Natalie Ward and Hope Bender both won twice against Marina for the Sailors in the Sunset League double dual scoring meet Thursday at Marina.

Ward won the 100-meter hurdles (16.98); and 300 hurdles (48.0). Bender was first in the 100 in 13.60 and 200 meters in 28.46.

Peri Howser was the overall winner in the pole vault (10-7) and Paloma Lamas was the overall winner in the shot put for Newport Harbor (0-3 in league).

The Sailors’ Paige Tennison set personal records in the 800 in 2:25.31 and 1,600 in 5:06.62.
