Boys’ Soccer: Estancia’s Gomez shares Orange Coast League Offensive MVP again
Estancia High senior striker Cristian Gomez shared the Orange Coast League Offensive MVP award for the second straight season as his boys’ soccer team finished third in league.
Gomez is joined on the first team by teammates Cristian Montillo, Kevin Pizarro and Alex Esquivel, as well as Costa Mesa’s Franco Ramirez and Cesar Pineda.
Gomez led Estancia with 12 goals in 10 matches. With Gomez, the Eagles (10-6-7, 4-2-4 in league) reached the CIF Southern Section Division 5 playoffs, their second straight postseason appearance under Coach Robert Castellano.
Montillo anchored an Estancia defense that allowed only 20 goals in 23 matches.
Pizarro, a freshman midfielder, produced seven goals and two assists.
Esquivel, a senior midfielder, had one goal.
Ramirez and Pineda were seniors who played midfield and forward for Costa Mesa (4-6-4, 3-3-4), which placed fifth in league.
Estancia junior defender Marco Pineda and junior midfielder Jorge Mendoza were second-team selections.
Saddleback’s Gary Carbajal repeated as the Orange Coast League MVP.
