COSTA MESA — Vanguard University opened its season with a nonconference split with Arizona Christian. The Lions won the opener, 9-3, but dropped the second game, 6-2.

Scott Simons pitched six hitless innings to earn the Game 1 win. He walked one and struck out two and allowed no earned runs.

Alec Rosales had a three-run double in the third inning for the hosts and finished with four runs batted in.

Brandon Young and Michael Castillo each had two hits for the Lions.

In the second game, Hank Yates and Nikko Tountas each went two for four with one RBI for the Lions, who surrendered four unearned runs.

J.R. Bromberg allowed two earned runs and six hits in four innings as the Lions’ second-game starter, while Kevin Ponzo and Gabe Garcia combined for 21/3 innings of scoreless relief for VU.

Arizona Christian falls to 1-6.
