ARCADIA — On a big stage, Ethan Cochran shined with the spotlight on him.

The Newport Harbor High senior had a huge day, winning the discus and shot put events at the Arcadia Invitational Saturday. He improved on his nation-leading mark in the discus with a throw of 209 feet, 8 inches.

“I was really excited,” Cochran said by phone. “All of my training has been focused for the Arcadia point. I was pretty much expecting it. I also PR’d on Thursday in a dual meet. But, today was perfect. I was trying to get to 213, but I couldn’t get there. I’m looking forward to that.”

Cochran’s mark was impressive considering there was little wind during the competition, Newport Harbor boys’ track and field coach Nowell Kay said.

“He’s just on fire right now,” Kay said.

Newport Harbor senior Steve Michaelsen medaled twice, finishing fifth in the discus (179-9) and eighth in the shot put (57-2). Michaelsen is No. 2 in the state and No. 6 in the nation in the discus with a 185-1 from last week.

Junior Marty Taylor, another Sailors’ thrower, finished sixth in the shot put (57-7).
