High School Roundup: CdM stuns Uni
CORONA DEL MAR — Brett Olson went two for four with a run batted in to help lead the Corona del Mar High past University and star pitcher Jordan Scheftz, 9-7, Friday at CdM.
The Sea Kings (6-11, 2-5 in league) pounded out 10 hits on Scheftz, the UC Irvine-bound senior who went the whole way. CdM overcame a 5-0 deficit after two innings.
The Sea Kings scored two in the second inning after Nolan McCarthy’s two-RBI single.
CdM added two more runs in the third, highlighted by Tyler Duncan’s double.
Max Stone’s sacrifice fly after a double by Baron Schwartz helped the Sea Kings tie it up, 5-5, in the fifth. But Uni answered with two runs in the top of the sixth.
CdM swung back with four runs in the bottom of the sixth. Hunter Heckendorn drove in two runs with a single and Olson gave the Sea Kings the lead for good with an RBI single.
Peter Walecka pitched the final five innings to get the win for the Sea Kings, who play host to Beckman on Tuesday.
“The kids had a fantastic approach,” CdM Coach John Emme said of his players. “They took what we talked about in practice and did it in the game. It was about preparation meeting execution.”
