Doubles teams, Korber advance

OJAI — The Corona del Mar High doubles team of Carter Wheatley and Ismaen Aboubakare, as well as the Sage Hill team of Andrew Kurzweil and Alex Manolakas, each won twice Thursday to advance in the CIF doubles section of the prestigious 111th annual Ojai Valley Junior Tournament.

CdM senior Shane Korber also advanced in the CIF singles division. Several local junior tennis players and teams from Orange Coast College will also play Friday at the tournament.

Wheatley and Aboubakare defeated Francisco Angulo and Joshua Milla of San Luis Obispo, 6-4, 6-1, in the first round. They then defeated Garrett Gooch and Aaron Marvin of Westview, 7-6, 6-3. The seniors will play Nicolas Cummins and Blake Eggleston of Palm Desert in a round of 16 match at 11 a.m. Friday at The Thatcher School.

Kurzweil and Manolakas got by Blake Mackall and Gregory Mak of Cate, 6-2, 7-5, then defeated Matt Richter and Nicholas Bauer of Rancho Buena Vista, 6-4, 7-5. They’ll play the Harvard-Westlake tandem of Harrison Katt and Matthew Wagner in another round of 16 match at 11 a.m. Friday.

The Georgetown-bound Korber easily won his first two matches, topping Conner Treacy of Santa Monica High, 6-1, 6-1, before defeating Matthew Breisacher of Santa Margarita, 6-0, 6-1. Korber will play Tyler Pham of Rancho Bernardo in a round of 16 match at 9:30 a.m. Friday, also at The Thatcher School.

Sage Hill junior Robbe Simon won his first CIF singles match via default before losing to Jack McCullers of Mission Hills, 7-5, 6-0.

In the junior divisions at Ojai, CdM resident Henry Gordon is the No. 3 seed in boys’ 14 singles. Gordon defeated Nicholas Mitchell of Arizona on Thursday and will play a round of 16 match Friday. Newport Beach resident Garrett Kurtz won his first match in boys’ 14 singles via default and will also play Friday in the round of 16.

CdM sophomore Nini Ugrelidze is the No. 5 seed in girls’ 16 singles. She defeated Alice Li of Ojai, 6-1, 6-1, on Thursday and also has a round of 16 match Friday.

Orange Coast College has two doubles teams and a singles player still alive in the women’s community college draw. Lianne Wheelock defeated players from Ventura and Consumnes River on Thursday and will play again Friday at Ventura College. Also, the doubles teams of Wheelock and Hanna Mancino, as well as Casey Kawabe and Remi Sutton, each won twice to advance to Friday’s play at Camino Real Park

Mancino and Kawabe each lost opening-round matches in singles.

The Orange Coast College men’s team of Rex Miller and Paul Tran is still alive in the community college doubles draw after upsetting No. 4-seeded Patrick Collins and Michael Tjuatjauarma of De Anza, 6-4, 6-3. Miller and Tran have a round of 32 match today against a team from Cypress. OCC’s other men’s doubles team, Felix Demiro and Pat Wright, was eliminated in the round of 64.

OCC’s Jesse Chen lost in the round of 64 in men’s community college singles, as did teammate Gregory Villacana.
