Boys’ Volleyball: Newport Harbor sweeps Hart

The Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball team opened the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs with a sweep.

Kevin Rakestraw, bound for Stanford, appears determined to make his final year with the Sailors a memorable one.

Rakestraw pounded 21 kills to lead Newport Harbor past Newhall Hart, 25-19, 25-19, 25-17.

Clay Carr added 11 kills and Nic Sargeant had 21 digs for the Sailors (20-8), who finished in second place in the Sunset League.

Newport Harbor advances to the second round where it will play against San Clemente (30-2) on Thursday.

The site will be determined by coin flip on Wednesday.
