College Roundup: UCI tops Cal Poly

IRVINE — Junior Crosby Slaught allowed one run in seven innings and struck out five to help host UC Irvine post a 3-2 win in the third and deciding game of its Big West Conference baseball series against Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on Sunday.

The win ups UCI’s record to 31-13, 10-5 in conference.

RBI doubles by seniors Sean Madigan and Brian Hernandez gave UCI a 2-1 lead in the third and the ‘Eaters tacked on a run in the fifth on an RBI single by junior Jordan Leyland.

Freshman Andrew Thurman pitched two innings to earn his first save.

Leyland (two for four) was the lone Anteater with multiple hits.

The Mustangs are 21-21, 10-8.

Southern California Regionals

WALNUT — Orange Coast College sophomore Sara Toberty qualified first in the women’s 1,500 meters to lead the Pirates at the preliminaries Friday at Mt. San Antonio College.

Toberty’s time was 4 minutes, 35.23 seconds.

OCC freshman Megan Foley qualified third in the same event (4:40.24) and qualified fourth in the 800 (2:16.06).

OCC’s Alex Leyva qualified fourth in the men’s javelin (177 feet, 3 inches), an event in which Kameron Turner (qualified seventh at 171-01) and Robert Stevens (ninth at 169-0) will also represent the Pirates.

In the men’s 10,000 final conducted Friday, OCC’s Jake Dawson was fifth in 32:21.59 and OCC’s Patrick Douglas was seventh in 32:31.66.

In the women’s 10,000 final, OCC’s Andrea Gayton-Jacob was 10th in 40:10.14.

Breahna Wright (fifth in the women’s javelin at 111-02), Hugo Gutierrez (sixth in the men’s 1,500 in 4:04.67), Rich Nelson (ninth in the men’s shot put at 46-0), Barron Maizland (10th in the men’s 3,000 steeplechase in 9:57.84), and Grace Adams-Handy (11th in the women’s steeplechase in 12:10.74) also qualified for the finals, scheduled Friday at Mt. SAC.

Occidental Invitational

LOS ANGELES — UC Irvine junior Maggie Newton-Neal was the top collegiate finisher, fifth overall in the women’s 800 meters, clocking a time of 2:09.50 Saturday.

Senior Amber Sangster was third in the women’s discus throw (143 feet, 1 inch).

UCI junior Sam Hyams was the top collegiate finisher, third overall, in the men’s 1,500 with a time of 3:45.19.

UCI senior Colin Hacker was fourth in the same event in 3:46.12.

UCI plays host to the Big West Conference championships Friday and Saturday. Field events begin at 10 a.m. and running events at 3:30 p.m. each day.

SACRAMENTO — The Orange Coast College men’s novice eight won its division in the event contested in late April.

The boat included Austin Grove, Alex Sheridan, Cruz Welborn, Kyle Green, Josip Marovic, Nick Kline, Christian Taylor, Garrett Pickard and coxswain Andy De Lorme.
