Briefs: Mustangs advance

The Costa Mesa High boys’ tennis team has advanced to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division IV playoffs because Silverado of Victorville forfeited its first-round match, the CIF Southern Section announced Tuesday.

Silverado and Hesperia were involved in an improper scrimmage that took place Monday, the CIF Southern Section said in a release.

Hesperia forfeited its wild-card match.

CIF member schools are allowed one scrimmage a year and that scrimmage must take place before each school’s allowable regular-season contest, or Feb. 28.

The players at Monday’s scrimmage are ruled ineligible. Silverado and Hesperia now don’t have enough players to compete because 23 of 24 players participated in the scrimmage, the CIF Southern Section ruled.

Silverado was 19-0 before the ruling.

Costa Mesa (7-4) was scheduled to play at Silverado Wednesday in the first round. In Friday’s second round, the Mustangs will play the winner of the match between top-seeded Viewpoint (12-1) of Calabasas and a wild-card winner.

Two on U.S. team

John Mann, a former Corona del Mar High standout, and Ryan Bailey, a former UC Irvine All-American, have made the roster for the U.S. men’s national water polo team that will compete in the FINA World League Prelims at Costa Mesa High this weekend.

Mann, who also starred at UC Berkeley, and Bailey, who competes for Newport Water Polo Foundation, are two of four centers on the team.

The Americans will face Canada Friday at 7 p.m. and again Sunday at noon to determine seeding for the FINA World League Super Final next month in Italy.
