The Anteaters (30-25, 12-11 in conference) enter Sunday in a fourth-place tie with the Aggies (27-29, 12-11), who received a complete-game, five-hitter from Tom Briner on Saturday to clinch the three-game Big West series.

It’s the fifth conference series that UCI has dropped this season, the most it has lost since losing five conference series in 2003.

Briner struck out one and walked one, yielding the only Anteaters’ run in the ninth inning, when senior second baseman Tommy Reyes tripled with one out and scored on senior first baseman Jordan Fox’s groundout.

Senior shortstop D.J. Crumlich, , senior center fielder Christian Ramirez, junior left fielder Jeff Stephens and freshman right fielder Connor Spencer added singles.

UCI senior starting pitcher Crosby Slaught allowed three runs on five hits in four innings to absorb the loss. He is 7-7 this season and 23-10 for his career.

UCI sophomore Phil Ferragamo worked four shutout innings in relief, allowing just three hits.

Davis scored two in the second inning and one in the fourth. Brett Morgan paced the Aggies’ eight-hit attack by going two for four with one run batted in. The teams complete the season Sunday at 1 p.m.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

NCAA West prelims

AUSTIN, Texas — UC Irvine senior Jacob Yowell tied his personal-best time in the 110-meter hurdles quarterfinals Saturday but failed to advance at the University of Texas.

Yowell’s time of 13.91 seconds placed him fifth in his heat. He was 17th among 27 and only 12 advanced to the NCAA Championships in June.

Yowell initially posted that time of 13.91 in setting a meet record while winning at UCI’s Spring Invitational in March. The time ranks No. 2 in school annals.

The ‘Eaters’ 4x400 relay of Dominic Jester, Yowell, Chris Carson and Charles Jock placed sixth in their heat with a time of 3 minutes, 10.43 seconds and finished 16th among 24 teams Saturday.

Jock will represent UCI in the NCAA Championships June 6-9 when he competes in the 800 meters at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa. He was runner-up in the event a year ago.
