UC Irvine sophomore Charles Jock has been named All-American by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Assn.

Jock advanced to the NCAA semifinals in the 800 meters, after winning the Big West Conference title in the event. He was also named Big West Athlete of the Year in men’s track.

Jock broke the UCI record in the 800 four times this season, originally besting the time of three-time Olympian Steve Scott.

He set the current standard of one minute, 46.17 seconds in the NCAA semifinals in Eugene, Ore.

Jock becomes UCI’s first All-American in track and field since hammer thrower Mike Beerer was recognized in 2006. He is the first Anteater All-American in a track event since 1988, when Richard Graves gained the distinction in the 1,500.

Jock will compete in the USA Championships, June 23-27, at Des Moines, Iowa.
