UCI redshirt delivers

Pete Fernandez will be a redshirt freshman on the UC Irvine men’s golf team, but that doesn’t mean he was inactive while competing this past weekend.

On the contrary, Fernandez, a Bakersfield High graduate, made himself feel right at home. He won the title of the Irvine City Championship that concluded Sunday at Strawberry Farms Golf Club.

Fernandez shot a five-under-par 66 in Sunday’s final round to finish the two-day event with a tournament-record total of seven-under 135. He opened with a 69 on Saturday.
