Briefs: CdM players to meet at Junior Olympics

The SOCAL Black team that features four Corona del Mar High graduates will meet the CdM Aquatics 18-and-under girls’ team as the USA Water Polo Junior Olympics continues Friday in the Bay Area.

Both teams advanced to the same Platinum Division pool after winning games Thursday. Top-seeded SOCAL, which features CdM graduates Alex Musselman, Pippa Saunders, Diana Murphy and Victoria Pierotti, as well as Newport Harbor graduate Maddy McLaren, blanked Willamette Valley, 24-0, in its first game. SOCAL then got past Chawp White, 13-6.

Ninth-seeded CdM beat Modesto/Stanislaus, 13-2, before topping Xtreme, 13-8. CdM will play San Diego Shores at 7 a.m. Friday at Palo Alto High before tangling with SOCAL at 10:40 a.m. SOCAL then plays San Diego Shores at 2:20 p.m.

Newport Water Polo Foundation, seeded 13th, also won a pair of games Thursday to advance to the Platinum Division. Newport topped Michigan Water Polo Club, 14-1, before getting past Davis, 9-3.

Newport plays Huntington Beach Orange at 7 a.m. Friday at Stanford, before facing off with 680 “A” at 10:40 a.m.

Newport’s 16-and-under girls, seeded 27th, also went 2-1 on the first day to advance to the Platinum Division.

Doheny falls in U.S. Open quarters

Newport Beach resident Andrew Doheny failed to advance out of the quarterfinals Thursday at the U.S. Open of Surfing Men’s Junior Pro competition near the Huntington Beach Pier.

Doheny, 19, finished with a point total of 6.27. He finished fourth in his four-surfer heat; only the top two advanced to the semifinals.

Doheny finished tied for 13th place. He earned 277 ratings points and $700.

Sage Hill School graduate Courtney Conlogue will compete Friday in the Women’s Pro division quarterfinals. Conlogue, who is ranked No. 5 on the Assn. of Surfing Professionals women’s World Championship Tour, will face No. 7-ranked Malia Manuel of Hawaii in the first quarterfinal heat at about 12:30 p.m.

The heat is a rematch of 2009, when Conlogue defeated Manuel in the final to win the U.S. Open title.
