Title time for Lightning club
The Newport Lightning Basketball Club’s 10U boys’ team captured last weekend’s Focus World Championships in Anaheim.
Continuing on the successful spring-summer seasons, the Lightning beat Basketball U White and Southeast Elite on Saturday in pool play and came back Sunday to beat Slam N Jam and Basketball U Blue to capture the 10U title.
The Lightning were led by the stellar play of Max Morris, DJ Rodman, Matt Olson, Luke Chelf and Adam Flood. Mason Melcer, Matt Ueberroth, Cameron Kayl, Tyler Hollander, Bryce Motal and Tarik Aliyazicioglu all played key roles during the big weekend.

12U also wins title
The Newport Lightning Basketball Club continued on its success over the last month having gone 12-3 in four tournaments and capturing runner-up trophies the last two weekends. However, this weekend the 12U team captured the championship at the Focus World Championships in Anaheim.
The Lightning beat Basketball U White and Downey Ballhogs on Saturday in pool play and beat Central Valley and Basketball U Blue to capture the recently elusive gold trophy.
The Lightning were led by the strong play of sixth-graders Sachin Gokhale, Will Ueberroth, Tyler Flood, Jake Pearson, Chase Grippo, Grant Joyce, CJ Ursetta and Cameron Schank as well as fifth-graders David Atencio, Dylan Thoerner and Kyle Giberson.
Atencio led the team in scoring for the weekend, Ursetta led the team in steals, Pearson led the team in blocked shots and Flood and Ueberroth led the team in rebounding.
The Newport Lightning will hold open tryouts for grades 3-8 on Aug. 28 at the Sage Hill School gym.
