College Roundup: UCI’s Wise scores 10 in two wins

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior Mitch Wise scored 10 combined goals in a pair of victories Saturday at UCI.

Wise had five goals in a 16-8 triumph over Chapman, then matched that feat in an 18-7 win over Redlands.

Jacob Mourer added four goals against Chapman and Nick Pfeil had four against Redlands for the Anteaters (2-0).

UCI returns to action Friday with a nonconference home game against UC Davis at 7 p.m.

UCI-LMU tournament

IRVINE — Junior Aly Squires recorded 13 kills for UCI, but No. 1-ranked Nebraska won, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21, Saturday night at the Bren Events Center.

Freshman Marisa Bubica added 11 kills, senior libero Kristin Winkler had 14 digs and senior setter Marissa Alvarez had 34 assists for the Anteaters (2-5).

Nebraska improved to 4-0.

Earlier Saturday, the Anteaters defeated Colgate, 25-18, 25-17, 16-25, 25-11, behind 17 kills from Squires.

Winkler added 15 digs and Alvarez had 34 assists for the Anteaters, who hit .277 as a team, 101 points better than Colgate (0-6).

Concordia tournament

IRVINE — Junior Grace Konstanzer and sophomore Ashli Bellinger had eight kills each to lead Vanguard University to a 25-22, 25-14, 25-15 win Saturday night at Concordia.

Sophomores Kendall Haldi and Jessica Neves had seven kills each, while sophomore Carly Maxwell had 20 assists and sophomore Kelly Heenan had 21 digs for the Lions.

Illinois Tech dropped to 3-5.

Neves had 12 assists and eight kills to lead Vanguard to a 25-14, 25-11, 22-25, 25-10 triumph over Lee of Tennesee on earlier Saturday at Concordia.

Bellinger had a team-best nine kills for No. 10-ranked Vanguard (8-5), for which Maxwell had 17 assists and Heenan, a Newport Harbor High product, added 13 digs.

Lee fell to 5-2.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2, Embry-Riddle 0

COSTA MESA — Junior Kayla Arenas had a goal and an assist to lead in the Lions in their season opener Saturday.

Arenas assisted on Vanguard’s first goal in the opening minute, when junior Jordan Davidson scored.

Arenas then scored in the 60th minute off an assist from senior Amanda Couch.

Junior goalie Paige Sikes had two saves for Vanguard.

The Lions (1-0) outshot Embry-Riddle, 21-2.

Embry-Riddle is 1-3-1.

COSTA MESA — The Lions fell to 0-2-1 after the nonconference game Saturday.

Sophomore goalie Alejandro Figeroa had three saves for Vanguard.
