Breakers fall to Capitals

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The Orange County Breakers lost all five matches in a 25-15 setback to Sacramento in the World Team Tennis Western Conference Championship on Friday at Family Circle Tennis Center.

The Breakers won their final five regular-season matches to earn their first berth in the WTT playoffs since 2009 and take the top seed in the Western Conference playoffs from the Capitals. Orange County, formerly known as the Newport Beach Breakers, defeated Sacramento, 21-15, to complete the regular season on July 28.

The Breakers, guided by UC Irvine men’s coach Trevor Kronemann, finish 8-7, while Sacramento (8-7) advances to face the winner of Saturday’s Eastern Conference Championship, between the Washington Kastles and the New York Sportimes in Sunday’s final to decide who will claim the King Trophy.

Sacramento is attempting to win a league-best seventh WTT title, while Washington, which features Venus Williams, is on a 30-match win streak.

Newport Beach resident Coco Vandeweghe helped Sacramento post a 5-4 win in mixed doubles Friday. She also earned a 5-4 women’s singles triumph over Jana Juricova to give the Caps an eight-game lead heading into the final set.
