High School Roundup: Newport wins OC Invitational

OC Invitational
HUNTINGTON BEACH — Newport Harbor High won in thrilling fashion, scoring a 3-2 win on strokes against Huntington Beach in the title game to win the tournament for the second straight year Saturday at Marina High.
It was 0-0 before the game would be decided on strokes. Junior Kirsten Rohan, senior Alex Chandler and senior captain Courtney McIntosh scored. Senior goalkeeper Andie Ward made three saves.
Seniors Sophie Evans and Nicole Zielenski were named to the all-tournament team. Coach Amanda Boyer pointed out junior Jill Messersmith and senior Emily Mitchell as key players for the day.
Newport came up with a 3-1 win against Marina in the semifinals with goals by Mitchell, Chandler and senior Hannah Beek.
The Sailors beat Edison in the quarterfinals, 2-1, with goals by Mitchell and Messersmith with an assist by Chandler. Newport Harbor had beaten the Chargers, 3-1, at Edison on Friday.
The Sailors play host to Marina on Monday.

D3 Invitational
NEWPORT BEACH — Sage Hill School won the tournament after having more head-to-head total wins than West Ranch and St. Margaret’s.
Sage Hill beat West Ranch, St. Margaret’s defeated Sage and West Ranch beat St. Margaret’s. The three teams beat Long Beach Wilson in the format of six singles and three doubles with players allowed to compete in both. Sage Hill, ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division III, won the title with 17 match wins, West Ranch, ranked No. 1 in CIF Division III, was second with 14 wins and St. Margaret’s, ranked No. 2 in CIF Division III, was third with 13 match wins.
Sage Hill’s Kimberly Brown, Ava Soleimany, Casey Astorino, and Laruen Hsu were named to the all-tournament team.

BOYS’ WATER POLO
Estancia tournament
COSTA MESA — The Eagles finished second in the tournament after losing to Tustin, 15-7, in the final Saturday.
Brody Hensheid scored four goals, while Hayden Swift and Derek Andrews added two goals each for Estancia (5-6) in the title match.
Andrews scored five goals to help the Eagles to a 13-8 win over Camarillo earlier Saturday in the eight-team tournament.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Edison def. Newport Harbor
NEWPORT BEACH — Cinnamon Sary had 21 kills, four blocks and four digs for the Sailors, but the Chargers won the Sunset League match, 21-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23, Saturday.
Torey Thompson had 46 assists, Alex Holbrook had 16 kills, Kasey Thompson had eight kills and Carolyn Bockrath had seven kills for Newport Harbor (12-5, 1-2 in league), ranked No. 4 in the CIF Southern Section Division I-AA coaches’ poll.
Edison is ranked No. 3 in CIF Division I-AA.
The Sailors play Tuesday at Huntington Beach, tied for the No. 10 ranking in CIF Division I-AA.
