Hoops team fares well in tourney

Aim High Hoops, based in the Newport-Mesa area, competed in the SGV Aloha Challenge this weekend led by Coach Daniel Lim at University and Irvine High School.

The 12U program led the way with a 3-1 record, defeating Hoop Stars (56-29), Irvine SCE (39-41) and host SGV (37-25), led by leading scorers Anthony Beltran and Tyler Chacon who dominated on the offensive end posting double-doubles in each outing.

Point guard Shan Dharod directed the teams attack averaging six assists per game and added eight points. In the backcourt, Kyle Hatch and Mikey Ruiz contributed defensively forcing turnovers with two steals and adding six points and two assists per game as they provided a lift by maintaining their consistency.

Chris Cox attacked the glass for seven rebounds with six points per game as he held down the paint defensively while Layson Savant also scored several key buckets to contribute to the weekend victories.

The 9U program played in the 10U division this weekend led by Coach Tommy Rausch. Tarik Aliyazicioglu was the leading scorer for the team. Brandon Figueroa provided tough defense throughout the tournament. Max Goffman led the team in assist with key passes to Aliyzicioglu. Jack Garza and Nikyle Gould led the team in rebounds. Chase Hall pressured opponents for key steals to contribute to many fast-break opportunities. Anthony Hall’s court awareness led to key assist to teammates. Joey Ruiz scored opening game shots and continued his aggressive defense.
