High School Roundup: Newport’s Bathen, Cosenza second in league

Sunset League finals
LOS ALAMITOS — Newport Harbor High seniors Megan Bathen and Kaitlyn Cosenza finished second in doubles Thursday at Los Alamitos High to advance to the CIF Southern Section preliminaries on Nov. 19.
No. 2-seeded Bathen and Cosenza lost to top-seeded Sarah Edwards and Sophia Bott of Los Alamitos, 6-4, 7-6 (7-4), 10-3, in the title match.
It was the third straight league doubles final appearance for Bathen, who with then-partner Mindy Wheeler was a winner as a junior. Bathen and Wheeler were runners-up in 2010.
Sailors’ junior Kate Knight was defeated by eventual singles champion Aliya Alenikof of Los Alamitos, 6-3, 6-2, in the semifinals Thursday.
Knight will be an alternate for the CIF preliminaries.

CORONA DEL MAR — The Sea Kings cliched second place in the Pacific Coast League and an automatic CIF playoff berth Thursday.
CdM’s Lauren Thaxter won at love in singles, including a victory over Stephanie Hazell, last year’s league singles champion.
Shelby Anderson and Olivia Dajee both won two out of three sets in singles for the Sea Kings (13-4, 7-2 in league).
CdM plays host to Beckman Monday.

COSTA MESA — The Eagles lost the Orange Coast League match, but still clinched a CIF playoff spot Thursday.
Estancia (8-10, 5-5 in league) tied for third in the OCL with Costa Mesa, but grabbed the league’s third playoff spot because the Eagles had the advantage in head-to-head by margin of victory. Estancia beat Cost Mesa, 11-7, and lost to the Mustangs, 10-8
Kenia Lara and Aphisara Sirirungivikrai won twice in doubles for Estancia against Calvary Chapel.

Sunset League individual tournament
FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Newport Harbor High freshman Grace Ferrell finished tied for third Thursday to advance to the CIF Southern Section Southern Regional individual tournament.
Ferrell shot six-over-par 78 over 18 holes Thursday at Mile Square Golf Club to make her 27-hole, two-day score 115.
Ferrell shot par 37 on Wednesday at Lakewood Golf Course.
The top seven advanced to the Southern Regional, which is at Recreation Golf Course in Long Beach on Wednesday at 8 a.m.

Newport Harbor 14, Fountain Valley 2
NEWPORT BEACH — Mitchell Mendoza, Ryan Warde and KJ Kelly scored three goals each for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Wednesday.
Curtis Fink and Henry McNamara added two goals and Dan Stevens added one for Newport Harbor (14-3, 3-0 in league). Senior goalie Wyatt Muller made five saves for the Sailors, who play at rival Corona del Mar Saturday at 6 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Reid Chase had four goals and senior Jake Wyatt have five assists to pace the host Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League contest Thursday.
The win improves CdM to 14-6, 7-0 in league and moves them within one win of clinching at least a tie for the PCL crown.
Second-place Northwood fell to 5-2 in league.
The Sea Kings, ranked No. 7 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, play host to Back Bay rival Newport Harbor on Saturday at 6 p.m.

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Kelsey Humphreys had 35 assists and eight digs to help the host Sea Kings earn a 25-15, 25-20, 25-22 Pacific Coast League sweep Thursday.
Sophomore Hayley Hodson had 15 kills for CdM (20-5, 7-0 in league), ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA.

NEWPORT BEACH — Junior middle blocker Carolyn Bockrath had nine kills and senior setter Torey Thompson had 29 assists to key the host Sailors’ 25-13, 25-19, 25-13 Sunset League triumph Thursday.
Remy Wilson and Gabby Shelley each contributed five kills for the Tars (15-7, 5-2 in league), ranked No. 6 in CIF Southern Section Division I-AA.

COSTA MESA — Freshman Emma Griffith had 20 kills to pace the host Eagles rally for a 21-25, 22-25, 25-14, 25-22, 15-4 Orange Coast League victory Thursday.
Juniors Abby Griffith and Chloe Davis chipped in 10 kills apiece for Estancia, which improved to 8-9, 5-3 in league with two league matches remaining.

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Jill Messersmith, Kirsten Rohan and Sydney Dexter all scored for the Sailors in the Sunset League game Thursday.
Newport Harbor is 12-4-3, 4-3-1 in league.
