Pirates prevail in OT
CHULA VISTA — Jackson Dionne kicked a 51-yard field goal in overtime to propel visiting Orange Coast College to a 34-31 East Division victory over Southwestern on Saturday night.
OCC freshman running back Domenic Betts carried 37 times for 272 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Pirates (3-4, 1-1 in the division). Betts’ 59-yard touchdown run with 13:17 left in the fourth quarter gave OCC a 24-10 lead.
But Southwestern (4-3, 0-2), ranked No. 18 in Southern California, answered with touchdown runs by Aaron Harris of 67 and 7 yards, the latter with 5:38 left in regulation, to force overtime.
Freshman Matt Carlyle, an Estancia High product, caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Mike Frank to open the overtime for OCC.
Southwestern’s Brett Nelson then hit Robin Johnson with a 22-yard scoring pass to even things.
Dionne, who kicked a 24-yard field goal as time expired in the first half, then decided things in the second series of downs in overtime.
Josh Hawkins rushed for 95 yards on seven carries for OCC, which amassed 397 yards on 57 rushing attempts.
Frank completed 11 of 20 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown for the Pirates.
Harris carried 29 times for 228 yards and three touchdowns for the Jaguars.
Orange Coast returns home to face College of the Desert on Saturday at 7 p.m.
