IRVINE — Senior guard Darren Moore had 19 points and 12 rebounds and senior guard Patrick Rembert had 18 points for the Anteaters in the opening game of the 2K Sports Classic subregional tournament Friday at the Bren Events Center.
Junior Eric Wise, slowed by a strained hip flexor sustained at USC, had six points and two rebounds in 14 minutes for UCI (1-2), which posted its first win for first-year coach Russ Turner.
Navy is 1-3.
Moore and Rembert shot 50% from the field and Rembert was two of three on three-point attempts.
Sophomore Mike Wilder had 10 points off the bench for UCI, which plays host to Seattle tonight at 7:30.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Freed-Hardeman 77, Vanguard 66
JACKSON, Tenn. — The No. 5-ranked Lions were handed their first loss of the season by the No. 7-ranked squad in the Rotary Classic on Friday.
Ariel Castillo had 26 points to lead the Lions, including five three-pointers.
Veronica Beavor had 14 points and four three-pointers, as Vanguard (1-2) made 13 of 36 from three-point range.
Senior point guard Sarah Boyd had eight rebounds, six assists and four point for Vanguard, which continues in the event tonight against two-time defending NAIA champion Union University of Tennessee, the tournament host.
Freed-Hardeman is 5-1.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine
FULLERTON — Senior Juliane Piggott had 18 kills to pace the visiting Anteaters in a 25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-19 Big West Conference setback Friday.
Mary Carls had 28 assists and Kristin Winkler added 23 digs for UCI (7-22, 3-13).
Shannon Fleming had eight kills and hit .438 for UCI.
The conference-leading Titans are 25-5, 13-2.
