High School Roundup: Sailors continue to roll
NEWPORT BEACH — Dominic Bulone is in his 14th year as coach of the wrestling program at Newport Harbor High.
He says this must be the Sailors’ best start to a season in his time. Newport Harbor continued to roll with two wins, beating rival Corona del Mar, 50-24, and Estancia, 55-12, to improve to 9-1 Thursday night at Newport’s gym.
Bulone credits Aaron Guyette, who has donated time in his gym, Innovative Results in Costa Mesa. Guyette also lends advice.
Newport Harbor assistant coach, David Garcia, a former Sailors wrestler, has also helped with his training in technique, Bulone said.
The efforts helped the team on Thursday night.
Newport Harbor’s Mason Mercury (179 pounds) provided one of several highlights. He recorded pins against CdM and Estancia.
Newport Harbor High’s James Pilz scored a 16-6 major decision against Corona del Mar’s Kaden Ebbinga for another highlight. Pilz recorded eight takedowns.
In the 145-pound division CdM’s Paul Nguyen and Newport Harbor’s Ryan Taormina provided an entertaining battle. But it was Nguyen who came out on top with a pin in the second period.
Nguyen and Taormina went back and forth in the first period, when Taormina led, 8-5.
