COSTA MESA — Chanel Schilling scored with one second left to lift Newport Harbor’s junior varsity team to a 7-6 win over Harvard-Westlake’s varsity squad and the tournament championship Wednesday at Costa Mesa High.

The Sailors were the lone JV team in the nine-team tournament that Harvard-Westlake won last year. The Wolverines are also the CIF Southern Section Division IV defending champs.

Schilling scored off a pass from Maddy Goodell on a six-on-five. Newport Harbor rallied from a 6-4 deficit with about three and a half minutes left, scoring its final three goals on power-play opportunities.

The Sailors were led by freshman goalie Carlee Kapana, a member of the national cadet team.

“She was the most valuable player,” Newport Harbor Coach Brian Melstrom said. “She stepped up big. She allowed us to do a lot of the things we did defensively. She got her hand on a lot of good quality shots.”

Melstrom said the Sailors were seeking revenge after losing to Harvard-Westlake in the Costa Mesa tournament last year by more than 10 goals.

Christina O’Beck scored two goals against the Wolverines. The teams were tied with 40 seconds left. Harvard-Westlake failed to score, leaving 20 seconds left for Newport Harbor, which drew an exclusion before Schilling’s game-winner.

The Sailors beat Sunny Hills, 14-7, earlier in the day.
