Senior goalkeeper Kekai Whitford had 16 saves to preserve the shutout and Lexi Magliarditi produced the game-winning goal for the host Lightning in the Academy League opener on Tuesday.

The goal came in the first half.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Costa Mesa 55, Los Amigos 28

Katherine Lawrence had 20 points and 10 rebounds and Aubriona Mathis added 19 points and eight rebounds for the host Mustangs in the nonleague game Tuesday.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Beckman 70, Newport Harbor 61

IRVINE — Joey Faris had 15 points for the Sailors in Tuesday’s nonleague road game.

Garrett Davis, Andrew Laidlaw and Collin Pipkin each scored nine for Newport Harbor (4-7), which opens Sunset League play Friday night at Los Alamitos.
