MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC San Diego

Senior Jeremy Dejno had 15 kills, hit .619 and produced a career-high five block assists to lead the host No. 8-ranked Anteaters to a 25-11, 25-20, 25-12, sweep in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Friday.

Zack La Cavera added nine kills, hit .389, and had a team-best seven digs as UCI (6-5, 3-4 in conference) hit .646 as a team, while holding UCSD to a .049 hitting percentage.

Daniel Stork had 29 assists and Scott Kevorken had six kills in nine swings, three aces and four blocks for the winners.

The Tritons fell to 0-9, 0-8.

UCI plays host to No. 1-ranked UCLA, guided by former UCI Coach John Speraw, on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Orange Coast def. Santa Monica

Jim Webb had 16 kills to lead the host Pirates to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-19 nonconference victory Friday.

Ty Hutchins added 11 kills for the winners (2-0), who had 26 assists from Brandon Duff.

Santa Monica is 0-1.

OCC will visit Los Angeles Trade Tech on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

Host Vanguard University earned a nonconference split, topping La Sierra, 8-1, after dropping the first game, 1-0, in the Lions’ season-opening contests on Friday.

Vanguard outhit the visitors, 6-4, in Game 1, but an error led to an unearned run in the second inning that was the difference.

In the Lions’ victory, junior pitcher Rachel Stalford allowed six hits and one run in a complete-game win, her first of the season.

Junior third baseman Shelby Kuryllo was two for four with three runs batted in in Game 2 for the Lions (1-1). Kuryllo had a team-best three hits on the day.

La Sierra is 1-3.

WOMEN’S INDOOR TRACK & FIELD

Washington invitational

SEATTLE — Megan Benson finished 19th among 41 in the 200 meters in 26.07 seconds to pace UC Irvine athletes at the UW Invitational on Friday.

Kaulyn Lee-McNeill was 25th in 26.57 and Charity Lyons was 30th in 26.72 for UCI.
