High School Roundup: Mesa’s Tufuga goes for 58 kills in five-set win

Costa Mesa def. Calvary Chapel

SANTA ANA — Junior opposite Mason Tufuga recorded a career-high 58 kills, rallying the Mustangs to a 19-25, 20-25, 30-28, 25-13, 15-11 win on the road Thursday.

Coby Pham amassed 50 assists and Andres Ramirez had 27 digs for Costa Mesa (4-1 in league).

The Mustangs, who are one match behind first-place Laguna Beach, travel to Laguna Beach on Tuesday.

Saddleback def. Estancia

Estancia played host to an Orange Coast League match that Saddleback won, 27-25, 19-25, 16-25, 25-12, 19-17, on Thursday.

Estancia (1-4 in league) plays host to Calvary Chapel on Tuesday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 15, Irvine 3

CdM swept in doubles in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League match at CdM.

The teams of Tyler Gaede and Jacob Cooper, Dan LaBruna and Blake Fesko, as well as Ryan Wessler and Grant Brown, all swept for the Sea Kings.

CdM is 7-7, 3-3 in league.

Newport Harbor 10, Fountain Valley 8

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Senior Reese Stalder swept in singles for the Sailors in Thursday’s Sunset League road match.

Stalder won, 6-0, 6-0, 7-5 to impreve to 38-0 this season. The doubles teams of David Schaefer and Andy Myers, as well as Mark Schaefer and David Lee, each won twice.

Newport Harbor is 13-2, 4-1 in league and in second place at the halfway point.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Newport Harbor 79, Marina 36

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Paige Fults swept the 100- and 200-meter races during the Sailors’ Sunset League event on the road Thursday.

Fults ran the 100 in 12.4 seconds and the 200 in 26.4 seconds.

Newport Harbor’s Hope Bender won the 400 (61.1) and the 300 hurdles (44.0), while Tamesha Holt claimed the shotput (27 feet 5 inches) and discus throw (63-3).

Other Newport Harbor winners included Emma Kratzberg (100 hurdles, 14.9), Lauren Loucks (800, 2:32.2), Emily Bacon (1,600, 5:27.2), Grace Clemence (pole vault, 10-7) and Julie Mariano (high jump, 4-9).

The Sailors are sending athletes to the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, which is on Friday and Saturday.

Corona del Mar 66.5, University 60.5

Raquel Powers won the 3,200 meters for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League meet at CdM.

Powers finished in 11 minutes, 40.9 seconds. She also was second in the 1,600, which was won by teammate Li;ly Schmidt in 5:25.3.

Other winners for CdM included Jillian Beese in the triple jump (32-4) and Victoria Rihm in the high jump (5-0). The 4x400 team of Erika Anderson, Schmidt, Katie Sullivan and Elin Wolker also finished first in 4:19.9.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Corona del Mar 94, University 33

Parker Nostrand won two events for the Sea Kings in Thursday’s Pacific Coast League meet at CdM.

Nostrand won the 400 meters in 53.4 seconds, as well as the 1600 in 4:36.9. Silviu Bocancea was another double event winner, in the shot put (44-2.5) and the discus (145-10).

CdM swept the sprint events behind Barrett Barbato in the 100 (11.3) and Charlie Blower in the 200 (23.1). Matt Paragas won the 3200 for CdM (10:18.2), while Austin Baxter won the 300 hurdles in 43.3.

CdM’s Charlie Blower, Jack Blower, Sutton Barbato and Barrett Barbato won the 4x100 in 44.1. The quartet of Ethan Lindt, Gabe Dickens, Chris Lin and Omar Adel won the 4x400 in 3:44.5.

Marina 81, Newport Harbor 55

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sophomore Ben Wilson finished first in the 1,600 (4 minutes 37.9 seconds) and the 3,200 (10:48.3) for the visiting Sailors in Sunset League action on Thursday.

Kyle Fegan placed first in the pole vault in 12 feet 6 inches and Michael Jarboe won the shotput (49-3).

Newport Harbor will have athletes at the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational, which starts Friday and ends Saturday.
