Cal Poly SLO 1, UC Irvine 0
SAN LUIS OBISPO — Starting pitchers Elliot Surrey and Justin Calomeni made it another pitchers’ duel but this time No. 16 UC Irvine fell to fifth-ranked Cal Poly Saturday in a Big West Conference game at Baggett Stadium.
The loss snapped a nine-game win streak by the ‘Eaters, who dropped to 34-15 and 15-2 in the Big West.
Surrey had a runner reach against him in every inning through five but managed to keep the Mustangs off the scoreboard until he surrendered a single run in the sixth. The lefty gave up a leadoff double to Nick Torres and Jimmy Allen came up with a clean two-out hit through the left side to drive in the deciding run. Surrey would go on to deal a scoreless seventh and eighth but suffered the hard-luck loss to fall to 6-3.
First pitch of the series finale is slated for 1 p.m.
