Ross, Gibb on track in World Cup Final
CAMPINAS, Brazil — Newport Harbor High product April Ross, as well as Costa Mesa resident Jake Gibb remained undefeated in their respective women’s and men’s divisions during the first round of beach volleyball play at the World Cup Final on Wednesday.
Ross, who lives in Costa Mesa, teamed with Jennifer Kessy to defeat the No. 10-seeded duo from Argentina, 21-17, 21-16, in 37 minutes. The 2012 Olympic silver medalists, who are seeded No. 2 in Brazil, later defeated the No. 7-seeded duo from Australia, 21-18, 21-19, in 36 minutes.
Gibb, playing with new partner Casey Patterson, swept the No. 10-seeded entry from South Africa, 21-12, 21-18, in 31 minutes. Gibb and Patterson are seeded No. 1.
Gibb and Patterson finished second in a Federation International de Volleyball tournament, completed Sunday in Argentina.
Both Ross and Gibb will be back in action on Thursday.
