Former UC Irvine baseball standout Christian Bergman made his Major League debut Monday, when he started for the Colorado Rockies against the visiting Atlanta Braves.

Bergman, a 24th-round draft pick by the Rockies in 2010 after a four-year career at UCI, allowed two runs on five hits in six innings and was charged with the loss in a 3-1 setback.

Bergman, who was just four for 38 in his minor-league hitting career, singled in his first major league at-bat and was one for two.

Bergman was called up from Triple A Colorado Springs, where he was 4-4 with a 3.84 earned-run average.

He earned his first major league spring training invitation in 2014 after spending all of 2013 with the Double-A Tulsa Drillers. He was 8-7 with a 3.37 ERA at Tulsa and made the Texas League All-Star team.

Bergman, who was 9-3 as both a junior and senior and was 23-12 at UCI, was the 2012 California League Pitcher of the Year after going 16-5 with a 3.65 ERA for the Modesto Nuts.

As a UCI freshman in 2007, Bergman started a game in the 2007 College World Series.
