Boys’ Volleyball: Bryan Cottriel resigns as Newport Harbor HS coach
Bryan Cottriel has stepped down as Newport Harbor High boys’ volleyball coach after one season with the Sailors, Principal Sean Boulton said Monday night.
Cottriel says he wants to spend more time with his family.
“It’s a lot of work,” Cottriel said. “My kids are getting to the point that they are older. I really want to spend more time with them.”
Cottriel said he will work as an assistant for the girls’ volleyball team with Coach Dan Glenn.
Glenn had coached the boys’ team before but resigned because of all the work involved. However, he would be the ideal person to take over the program, Boulton said. But that will be up to Glenn.
Glenn called Cottriel, “the perfect fit,” for the boys’ volleyball team when Cottriel was hired last year.
The Sailors went 10-19 last year and lost a playoff tiebreaker in the Sunset League against Edison in five sets (25-23, 21-25, 23-25, 27-25, 20-18).
Cottriel had coached with Glenn and learned a great deal from the legendary coach before leaving Newport Harbor to coach the girls’ team at Temecula Great Oak. Cottriel also coached the boys’ and girls’ teams for three years (2010-12) at Santa Margarita and worked as an assistant under Steve Conti at Corona del Mar for boys’ volleyball.
