Briefs: UCI picked eighth
UC Irvine has been picked to finish eighth in the nine-team Mountain Pacific Sports Federation preseason coaches poll for men’s water polo.
The Anteaters, coming off a 14-12 season that included an 0-8 record in the MPSF, received 12 points, one better than Pepperdine.
USC edged Stanford atop the poll with 61 points and five first-place votes. Stanford had 60 points and four first-place votes.
Pacific (47 points) was picked third, followed by, in order, UCLA and Cal (41 points each), UC Santa Barbara (28), Long Beach State (23), UCI and Pepperdine.
The Anteaters, coached for the ninth season by Marc Hunt, open the season Sept. 7 in the Brown University tournament in Providence, R.I. UCI plays MIT and St. Francis of New York on the first day of the four-game tournament, which concludes with contests against Brown and Harvard.
UCI’s first conference game is Oct. 5 at USC.

OCC football BBQ
A barbeque fundraiser for the Orange Coast College football program will be held Aug. 31 from 5 to 6 p.m. at the fitness complex patio above the north side of the football stadium.
Tickets, if purchased by Aug. 29 at the OCC Kinesiology/Athletics Division office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., are $15 for adults and $2 for student athletes.
The day of the event, tickets are $20 for adults and $3 for student-athletes.
