College Roundup: Pirates claim XC conference titles

MEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Empire Conference Championships

ORANGE — Orange Coast College runners placed first through fifth to create a perfect score for the victorious Pirates at Irvine Regional Park.

Luis Morales, who completed the four-mile course in 20 minutes, 36.15 seconds, was the individual champion. His OCC teammates, Brandon Ferguson (20:37.73), Jose Ortiz (20:46.38), Lucio Ramirez (20:53.41) and Jay Bonthius (20:55.50), finished second through fifth, respectively.

OCC also had seven of the top 10 finishers and 10 of the top 15.

Conner Garcia was seventh for the Pirates (21:12.38) and Cesar Galvez (21:48.72) was 10th.

OCC’s 15 points were 47 better than runner-up Riverside.

WOMEN’S CROSS COUNTRY

Orange Empire Conference Championships

ORANGE — Individual champion Karen Silvas topped four Orange Coast College runners to finish in the top five as the Pirates dominated to claim the team crown at Irvine Regional Park.

Silvas completed the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 2.12 seconds, followed by teammates Raeanna Cortez (19:07.71) and Leanne Allen (19:13.25).

OCC’s Guadalupe Cantoran was fifth (19:24.43), while Allison Nagel rounded out the OCC scoring by finishing ninth (19:54.47).

Kristin Son (11th in 20:01.38) and Mariah Chapin (14th in 20:21.97) also performed well for the Pirates, whose 20 team points were 35 better than second-place Fullerton.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Fullerton

Sierra Brown had 10 kills to lead the Pirates to a 25-14, 25-16, 25-23 Orange Empire Conference victory at OCC Friday night.

Megan Ritchie dished out 27 assists and Carina Perez notched 27 digs for OCC (10-4, 5-4 in conference).

Fullerton is 12-4, 5-4.

OCC will play at Golden West on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

MEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 1, Irvine Valley 0

Jorge Sanchez scored from 20 yards out in the 50th minute for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday at OCC.

Pedro Erhechury had the assist for OCC (8-4-2, 7-2-1 in conference).

Irvine Valley is 3-6-8, 3-4-3.

With the win, the Pirates (22 points) move to within one point of first place in the OEC, thanks to a 2-2 tie for Santa Ana (23 points) against Santiago Canyon on Friday. SCC and Golden West are tied for third with 17 points apiece.

OCC plays at third-place Golden West on Tuesday at 3 p.m. before its big home showdown with the first-place Dons on Friday at 3 p.m. at the OCC Soccer Complex.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Orange Coast 2, Saddleback 0

Shelle Zito and Aly Vargas goals for the Pirates, while Karly Freeman assisted on both in the Orange Empire Conference match Friday at OCC.

Golaie Emly Harrier made five saves for OCC (10-3-3, 8-3-2 in conference), which is in second place in conference.

Saddleback is 10-3-5, 6-2-4.

OCC (26 points in the OEC) will play at Fullerton College on Friday at 3 p.m.
