Vanguard 2, Concordia 1

IRVINE — An own goal in the 41st minute broke a 1-1 tie and propelled the visiting No. 3-seeded Lions in the semifinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Saturday.

Vanguard (12-6-1) will play host to No. 5-seeded The Master’s in the tournament final, Saturday at 1 p.m.

The Master’s knocked off top-seeded Hope International, 2-0, in the other semifinal Saturday.

Edgar Hernandez gave Vanguard the lead in the 19th minute, with an assist from Angel Maldonado.

Vanguard freshman goalkeeper Brandon Gomez, an all-conference performer, had eight saves as No. 24-ranked Concordia posted a 15-5 advantage in shots.

Concordia is 11-4-2.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC San Diego 10, UC Irvine 9

LA JOLLA — Lovre Milos led the visiting Anteaters with three goals in the nonconference game Saturday.

Dylan Peterson had 14 saves and Kyle Trush chipped in two goals for the No. 12-ranked ‘Eaters (13-10).

The No. 10-ranked Tritons are 13-9.

UCI plays host to No. 3-ranked USC on Sunday at noon.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

UC Irvine 86, Chapman 58

Freshman Jenny Dee had five three-pointers on her way to a game-high 17 points to lead the Anteaters in an exhibition game Saturday at the Bren Events Center.

Dee, who was six for 10 from the field and five for eight from three-point range, was one of five UCI scorers in double figures.

Sophomore Mokun Fajemisin had 10 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Chloe Kellum chipped in 13 points and eight rebounds and sophomore Shereen Sutherland had 10 points and seven rebounds for the winners.

Freshman Tierra Hicks had 10 points, while senior Methlyn Onogomuho contributed eight points, six assists and four rebounds.

Junior Raelyn Cheung-Sutton had seven assists to pace the Anteaters, who open their regular season at Northern Arizona on Friday.

UCI made nine of 14 three-point attempts (64.3%) and made half of its 58 field-goal attempts.UCI posted a 40-30 edge in rebounds.

Senior Madison McKenney made both of her three-point shots, while Hicks and sophomore Irene Chavez were both one for two from threedom.

Chapman had 24 turnovers, five more than UCI.
