Championship
MURRIETA — Corona del Mar High freshman Alyaa Abdulghany shot four-over-par 76 on Thursday at The Golf Club at Rancho California, and her season ended.
Abdulghany did not advance to the CIF state championship, as one of the top nine individuals among 128 competing at the regional. The cut was 73. But Abdulghany did provide a highlight.
Corona del Mar Coach Mike Starkweather said Abdulghany drove the green on the par-four No. 3 hole, then sank a putt for an eagle. She also had five bogeys and one double-bogey on her round, which Starkweather said was played in very hot conditions.
“It’s the first time she has played the course competitively, and it’s a tough, tough, course,” Starkweather said. “Fortunately, she’s only a freshman and she has next year. She would like to win it next year.”
