College Roundup: UCI men’s basketball falls to No. 2 Arizona, 71-54

Arizona 71, UC Irvine 54

TUCSON — The visiting Anteaters led the No. 2-ranked Wildcats, 46-41 with 10:04 left, but an 11-0 run that turned into a 24-4 surge over the next 8:46, helped the hosts (3-0) avert the upset.

Senior Travis Souza made four of seven, including three three-pointers, on his way to 11 points. He shared team-high-scoring honors with sophomore Luke Nelson, who had a team-best six assists.

Sophomore Mamadou Ndiaye had all nine of his points in the first half, after which UCI (2-1), led, 29-26. He added five rebounds and one blocked shot.

Will Davis had seven points and five rebounds for the ‘Eaters, who return to action on Sunday at 6 p.m. at Saint Mary’s.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Orange Coast def. Saddleback

Sierra Brown had 10 kills, Danielle Boyette had 32 assists and Carina Perez had 22 digs to pace the host Pirates in the 25-15, 25-15, 25-20 Orange Empire Conference sweep Wednesday.

OCC (14-8, 8-6 in conference) completed its regular season tied for fourth place in the eight-team conference.

Saddleback is 4-15, 2-12.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Pepperdine 76, UC Irvine 53

Freshman Jenny Dee came off the bench to post 11 points to lead the host Anteaters in the nonconference game Wednesday.

Brittany Glassow had eight points and six rebounds, while Methlyn Onogomuho had five points and eight boards for UCI, which shot 32.8% from the field, including just two for 16 from three-point range (12.5%).

UCI (1-2) had 22 turnovers, four more than the Waves (1-1), but UCI won the rebounding battle, 44-41.

Pepperdine made 25 of 31 fouls shots, while UCI was 11 for 22 from the line.

UCI plays host to San Jose State on Sunday at 2 p.m.
